Smithills School ‘Sinatra Centenary Concert’ In Aid of Bolton Hospice
Posted on: 18 Mar 2015
A standing ovation from the Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton typified the fantastic audience response to the packed Smithills School Music Department ‘Sinatra Centenary Concert’ in aid of Bolton Hospice which took place on Saturday evening March 14th. Yet again, this was one of the very best musical evenings which Smithills has staged in Bolton’s largest concert venue over the past twenty five years.
The concert opened with instant impact from the school’s award-winning Senior Brass Band and their twenty minute set was followed by equally excellent performances by the school’s award-winning Senior Big Band, Senior Concert Band, Community Choir and Community Wind Band. Repertoire for the evening ranged from the Senior Brass Band’s National Festival-winning twelve minute ‘Sinatra’ presentation and the Senior Big Band playing ‘Mack The Knife’ and ‘My Way’ to the Community Band’s ‘All The Way’ and ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ with the Community Choir singing ‘Get Me To The Church On Time’ which, as Sinatra followers know, was performed frequently by the American singer in many of his Rat Pack concerts.
Frank Sinatra was known to listen to classical music every day of his life and listed Vaughan-Williams, Puccini and Ravel amongst his very favourite composers, so to conclude the Sinatra-themed Smithills evening, the school’s award-winning Senior Concert Band performed Ravel’s iconic ‘Bolero’ superbly and to great effect. The Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton then instigated the standing ovation at the conclusion of the evening, which prompted the many hundreds of others in the circle balcony to follow their lead. The concert concluded at just after 10pm.
